Throw On Another Log

A week ago, just about the time the snow headed our way, one of our heat pumps broke. The repair men said that the motor needed replacing and a new one would have to be ordered. We called today and the part still isn't in. In the meantime, we've had to heat our main living area with the fireplace. It takes much more effort on my husband and son's part to keep us warm. They've had to get, chop and stack firewood all week. It requires all of us to continually feed the fire throughout the day and night. As much as everyone will be glad to have the heat pump running again, there's something about using the fireplace .....the smell of the wood burning outside, the flickering lights in the evening, Kelly laying in front of it reading her book..it has a coziness that can't come out of a heat duct!

I think it is easy to see how beautiful a fireplace or woodstove are when you don't HAVE to use them all the time. I think of Tina and all the wood they've hauled and burned all these years - everytime I go to their house it smells so woodsy and feels so cozy - but to her it has definitely lost some glamour.
We have had that a bit here in our new house this winter - everybody says (figures for us!) it is the coldest winter they can remember - usually have days in the 70s mixed in more frequently with "cooler" days. (NO we have had 30s that stay for weeks!) But in our new house with 10 foot ceilings the heat pump doesn't make it feel cozy at all - the only time we are cozy and truly warm is when we have a roaring fire going - and we have had one every day when it is cold outside. I made Travis light our first fire in the fall because I wanted one so bad, and we all stripped down to t-shirts because it got too hot - and even opened the door. (Yep, the neighbors thought the Clampetts were here! hee hee)
Enjoy the stove - and appreciate that heat pump!

Oh yeah, fireplaces were meant for stronger people than me. I love the ambiance and thank God for it because without we'd have more than ridiculous heating bills (even with it they're ridiculous), but I am so wishing we had central heat. In fact, when Margit asked if there was anything I wanted her to bring back from the States (she went for a wedding last weekend) I said "central heat". She thought it would be too heavy. Too bad. It does smell woodsy in here, but I'd gladly trade that for a heat duct.

We have a combination of baseboard heat and a woodburning stove. I try to use the stove every day the temp goes below 40, which is pretty much every day since the first week of January. *sigh* It helps with the electric bill, but it wears a little thin at times. I am so grateful this is not our only form of heat!

Why is it that the heater always goes on the blink when winter is at its coldest? Thank the Lord you have a fire place! I hope your heater is fixed soon.
